Published fractional COO retainers run $3,500 to $15,000 a month. One day a week, the most common arrangement, usually costs $5,000 to $10,000 at a $3M to $30M company. The table below this guide shows the minimum fees published by firms on this site; many list no price and quote after a call.
How COO pricing is structured
Fractional COOs price by time commitment more than any other role, because the work runs on a weekly cadence.
- Advisory, a few hours a month: roughly $3,000 to $5,000. A monthly or fortnightly session with the founder and a review of the scorecard.
- One day a week: $5,000 to $10,000. Runs the weekly leadership meeting, owns the scorecard and quarterly planning, and works on one or two processes at a time.
- Two days a week or more: $10,000 to $15,000 and up. Manages department heads directly and carries projects such as a reorganization or a systems change.
What drives the price
Headcount is the clearest driver. Running a leadership team of six managers takes longer than one of three. Locations matter: a COO who must visit a warehouse or a plant costs more than one who works by video. Industry adds a premium where operations are specialized, as in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and construction. And the starting point matters. A company with no written processes and no meeting cadence needs heavier hours for the first six months.
EOS integrator pricing
Many fractional COOs work as EOS integrators. Their fees sit in the same ranges, but watch the difference between two roles. An EOS implementer is a facilitator who runs your quarterly and annual sessions, usually billed per full-day session. A fractional integrator runs the business between those sessions. Some companies pay both. Budget for the implementer separately if you use one.
Day rates and projects
Fractional COOs who bill by the day typically charge $1,200 to $2,500. Fixed-fee projects include an operational assessment of two to four weeks, often $5,000 to $15,000, and defined jobs such as an accountability chart and meeting system installation, a process documentation sprint or an ERP or project-management tool selection. Some practitioners sell a low-cost diagnostic as an entry point.
Equity and incentives
Equity is less common for COOs than for CFOs and CTOs, because most buyers are profitable, founder-owned businesses. Where it appears, it is usually a profit share or a bonus tied to margin, a sale or a specific operational target. If you agree to one, define the measure precisely and how it is paid if the engagement ends early.
What the first month costs in time
Expect the founder to spend 8 to 12 hours in month one, more than for most fractional roles, because the COO takes over decisions the founder currently makes. Each department head should expect a one-to-one interview and a walkthrough of how their team works. After month one, the weekly leadership meeting is the main time commitment.
How to read a quote
Check the days or hours per week, which meetings the COO will run, whether they have authority to manage department heads, the minimum term (three months is common and integrator engagements often run 6 to 24 months), the travel policy and whether implementation of an operating system is included or billed separately.
