Fractional Chief AI Officer pricing is the least transparent of any role on this site. Most providers publish nothing and quote after a scoping call. The few published retainers run about $1,750 to $12,000 a month. Fixed-fee AI audits of two to four weeks run roughly $3,000 to $10,000. The table below shows what the listed firms publish.
Three levels of engagement
Prices cluster around how much the CAIO does.
- Advisory, 1 to 2 days a month: roughly $2,000 to $5,000. A monthly session with the CEO, a policy, a ranked list of use cases and vendor advice. The company does the work.
- Standing role, 2 to 4 days a month: roughly $5,000 to $10,000. The CAIO also runs the AI program: oversees builds, trains staff, reviews results and reports monthly.
- Embedded, a day a week or more: $10,000 a month and up, usually at companies above $50M or with several business units.
What drives the price
Hours drive most of it. After that: the number of teams involved, because training and change management across five departments take longer than across one; regulated data, such as health records, financial data or client data under strict contracts, which adds policy and review work; and whether the provider supplies engineers. Providers that also build automations often quote a lower advisory fee and earn more on the build.
The costs beside the retainer
A fractional CAIO decides what to build and buy. The building and buying cost extra. Business tiers of the main AI assistants run roughly $20 to $60 per user per month. Automation platforms and API usage add a variable cost that depends on volume. Custom builds by an agency or engineers run from a few thousand dollars for a simple workflow to tens of thousands for an integration with your core systems. Ask the CAIO for a full first-year budget, with license, build and retainer costs on separate lines.
Day rates and projects
Some providers bill a day rate of roughly $1,500 to $3,000. The fixed-fee audit is the most common entry point: two to four weeks of interviews and process mapping that ends with a ranked list of automations, estimated savings and a policy draft. Some providers credit the audit fee against a retainer that starts within a set window. Workshops for a leadership team typically run a half day to two days.
Equity deals
Equity-for-fee deals are rare for this role at the companies this site covers, because most buyers are profitable, founder-owned businesses with no plan to raise venture capital. Where an AI leader joins a startup whose product is AI, the role usually looks more like a fractional CTO deal.
What month one costs in time
Plan on 4 to 8 hours of the founder’s time and an hour or two from each team lead for interviews and process walkthroughs. Staff who already use AI tools should expect a short survey.
How to read a quote
Check the days per month behind the fee, whether builds are included or quoted separately, whether the provider resells or earns commission on any tool it recommends, the minimum term (three months then month-to-month is common) and what the first 90 days will produce in writing. A good quote names a measurable result, such as hours saved per week in a named process.
