A fractional Chief Strategy Officer typically costs $6,000 to $15,000 a month on retainer. Few publish rates, and many providers in this category are consulting marketplaces whose members set their own fees. Fixed-fee strategic planning projects are at least as common as retainers. The table below this guide shows any minimum fees the listed providers publish.

Two ways to buy strategy

A planning project. Eight to sixteen weeks of research, leadership interviews, an offsite and a written plan with quarterly priorities. Fees for a $10M to $100M company commonly run $15,000 to $60,000 depending on the research involved. This suits a company that needs a plan once a year and can run it internally.

A retainer. One to two days a week on an open-ended basis, typically $6,000 to $15,000 a month. The CSO runs the planning cycle, tracks execution against the plan, prepares strategy discussions for the board and manages specific initiatives such as a market entry or an acquisition pipeline.

Many companies combine the two: a project to set the plan, then a lighter retainer to keep it on track.

What drives the price

Company size and the number of business units drive the most. A single-product company needs far less analysis than one with four divisions in three countries. The research load matters: primary customer research, market sizing in a new region and competitor analysis all take time. Board involvement adds work when the CSO presents to investors or runs board strategy sessions. And deal work, where the CSO identifies and approaches acquisition targets, pushes hours up sharply during active periods.

M&A and success fees

When a fractional CSO works on acquisitions, some propose a success fee on completed deals. Be careful here. A fee tied to a completed transaction can create a conflict, because it rewards closing a deal over choosing the right one. In the US, success fees on certain transactions involving securities can also raise broker-dealer questions. A flat retainer with a defined scope for deal work is usually cleaner. Formal M&A advisory, with valuation and negotiation, is normally a separate engagement with an investment bank or M&A advisor.

Day rates

Strategy leaders who bill by time commonly charge roughly $1,500 to $3,500 a day, at the upper end of fractional rates, reflecting consulting backgrounds. Leadership offsites are often priced as a package, including preparation, facilitation and a written summary.

What month one costs in time

Plan on 8 to 12 hours of the CEO’s time in month one: interviews on history and ambition, access to financials by segment, introductions to key customers and board members, and time to review early findings. Each member of the leadership team should expect an interview of an hour or more.

How to read a quote

Check whether it is a project or a retainer, what the written deliverable is, how many interviews and how much customer research are included, who facilitates the offsite, whether acquisition work is in scope and how it is paid, and the term. A good quote names the strategic questions the work will answer, in the CEO’s own words.
