Published fractional CRO retainers start around $6,000 to $7,000 a month and run to $20,000 or more. The common band is $8,000 to $15,000 for a company between $2M and $20M in revenue. CRO pricing sits at the top of the fractional range because the role is tied directly to revenue, and buyers are willing to pay for that. The table below this guide shows minimum fees where firms publish them.
What the hours buy
Fractional CRO pricing tracks hours closely.
- Around 20 hours a month: about $6,000 to $8,000. Weekly pipeline review, forecast, process design and coaching for a founder and one or two reps.
- 10 to 15 hours a week: about $10,000 to $15,000. Runs the sales team, the forecast call, hiring and the comp plan.
- 15 to 20 hours a week or more: $15,000 to $25,000. Leads a team of five or more reps, often with sales development, and works closely with marketing and customer success.
Hourly rates of around $250 to $400 are common where firms publish them.
What drives the price
Team size drives the most. Coaching eight reps on live deals takes far more time than designing a process for two. Deal complexity matters next: enterprise sales with long cycles and buying committees take more senior attention than transactional sales. Industry specialization adds a premium in markets such as healthcare, industrial technology and financial services, where buyers are technical. And the starting state matters. A company with no CRM discipline and no defined stages needs heavier hours in the first quarter.
Bonuses and revenue shares
Fractional CRO is the role most likely to include performance pay. A typical structure is a lower retainer plus a bonus on new revenue above an agreed baseline, paid quarterly. Agree on what counts: bookings or collected cash, new customers only or expansion too, and how deals already in the pipeline at the start are treated. Be cautious with arrangements that look like commission only. In some US states, commission-based sales arrangements carry specific rules on payment timing after the contract ends; get the terms in writing.
Equity appears at venture-backed startups, usually a small grant vesting over two to four years in exchange for a lower cash fee.
Recruiting fees
Several fractional CRO practices belong to sales recruiting or staffing firms. That can be useful, because the CRO helps define the role and the firm fills it. Check whether placing reps carries a separate recruiting fee, often a percentage of first-year compensation, and whether the CRO’s advice on hiring is independent of that fee.
What the first month costs in time
Expect the founder to spend 6 to 10 hours in month one: pipeline walkthroughs, access to the CRM and call recordings, and a review of the deals the founder is closing personally. Each rep should expect an interview and ride-alongs on a few calls. Many firms structure the first 90 days as a written plan with diagnostic, design and execution phases.
How to read a quote
Check the hours behind the fee, who joins the forecast call, whether the CRO manages reps directly, the bonus terms and baseline, recruiting fees, the minimum term (three months is common and engagements typically run 6 to 18 months) and what the 90-day plan delivers.
